Many live-in programs such as The Bladenburg Volunteer Fire Department, Morningside Volunteer Fire Department and The Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company accept on a rolling basis. Others, such as the departments listed below accept live-ins in groups, usually in sync with the college semester.

I recently came across an article from Oneonta, NY thanks to our good friend Tiger Schmittendorf over at the FireRecruiter.com and RunToTheCurb.com. The article was encouraging in many ways, stating that the local paid fire department was considering hiring local college students (with degree tracks in emergency services) to work part time. I thought to myself, “What a great concept and hopefully this turns into an opportunity for a full blown live-in program in Oneonta”. So what we have here is a forward-thinking, progressive fire chief looking at his budget crisis and manpower shortage in a logical and fiscally responsible way. Not to mention the fact that he is recruiting future leaders for the fire service and giving them a solid foundation from which to build the rest of their career on. Then I read the comments from the community, wow what a disappointing and ignorant viewpoint from these fine citizens. Here are a couple of excerpts as well as a link to the article from the dailystar.com.
